Intensive Self-Care: Allow Yourself to Rest Without Guilt

Self-Love Allow Yourself to Rest Without Guilt

After the car accident earlier this month, I’ve been taking extra time to rest, so that my body can heal and recover. Coincidentally, during a group coaching call the other day, the topic of rest and self-care came up. Several members in our group (all high-achieving woman entrepreneurs) have asked for support and guidance on getting more rest and self-care time for themselves. Some of us have a tough time setting boundaries around work. You know, when you are a high achiever working for yourself, it’s very tempting to work ALL the time. However, if you don’t have adequate rest and self-care, your health and your business simply won’t survive. Other people have a hard time unplugging from Internet and social media (myself included). It becomes a distraction and time suck that interfere with both work and family/personal time.

Apparently, taking time for rest and self-care is a common challenge among high achievers.

It’s no surprise to me. Self-Care Deficiency is a hidden epidemic among moms, caregivers, healthcare professionals, small business owners and other high-achievers, as I discussed in my book Intensive Care for the Nurturer’s Soul: 7 Keys to Nurture Yourself While Caring for Others. So many women have a hard time ALLOWING themselves to rest — out of guilt, unworthiness, or because they are so wound up (mentally, physically, emotionally, or all of the above) that they simply cannot relax and rest . Can you relate?

I used to feel very guilty for sleeping in, especially when my kids were younger, and when it’s bright & sunny outside (that was an old programming from my childhood about not being lazy & wasting time). I often “override” my body’s signals with my strong will and my drive to achieve. The old programming that says if you rest & sleep in, it means you’re not a good mother or not working hard enough, used to bring up SO much guilt in me. I’d beat myself over and over.

Nowadays? NO GUILT. I honor and allow my body to rest when it needs to. The work will get done with more grace & ease, when I’m fully recharged.

How about you? Do you listen to your own body, and ALLOW yourself to rest without guilt? What old messages & beliefs get stirred up when you try to rest or do something nice for yourself?

Allowing yourself to rest is not being selfish or lazy. It’s an act of self-love. I love what my coach suggested — be “an overachiever for rest”. Let’s channel our overachieving energy into Intensive Self-Care. Let’s try it for a week, OK? Are you up for the challenge? :)

Tell me: What would you commit to do (or NOT do) today, in order to take better care of YOU? Please comment below and let me know. I’d love to hear from you.

If you need support in creating a self-care practice and more time for YOU (minus the guilt), I invite you to book a complimentary 30-min consultation with me via phone or Skype, and we will explore how coaching with me can help you. You can schedule your appointment here

Take good care of yourself, because you are irreplaceable.

P.S. My book Intensive Care for the Nurturer’s Soul is a PERFECT Mother’s Day gift — for yourself and/or for someone you really care about. You can order here.

Feeling Overwhelmed? You Need to STOP, DROP & ROLL!

Overwhelmed businesswoman

Do you feel anxious, stressed and overwhelmed? Are you exhausted at the end of the day?

If so, you’re not alone. In fact, most of my clients felt that way when they first came to me for coaching.

Grace started coaching with me a few years ago. She is a dentist with two thriving dental offices, a mom of two adorable children below age six, a devoted Sunday school teacher and a loving wife. As you can imagine, it’s no small feat for her to manage her business, family life and balance everything. Before coaching with me, she often felt stressed when her life throws her a curve ball.

One time when she called me, she was overwhelmed by the constant bickering of her staff. “It’s like I’m always trying to put out fires!” She said with a sigh, “Sometimes I feel like I’m on fire too!” I jokingly replied, “If you are on fire, perhaps you should stop, drop and roll.” And we both laughed.

That got me thinking. When my clients feel overwhelmed and stressed, their survival instinct is to try to “put out the fire” by frantically working harder and faster, hoping to cross off more items from their ever-growing to-do list. They bury themselves in the tasks, forego “non-essential” activity such as self-care and leisure time with friends and family… until they either successfully resolve the crisis, or run themselves down. If you have ever come down with a nasty flu or other illnesses after completing a major project, you know what I’m talking about.

So, what can you do instead? I suggest that you try my STOP, DROP and ROLL approach.

STOP
When you are stressed and overwhelmed, stop, and take stock of the situation. Assess your stress level and acknowledge your feelings of overwhelm. This is important, since suppressed emotions don’t go away. They only get buried in your body and will show up someday as a physical dis-ease.

Identify the source of your stress. Is it from external circumstances (such as job, relationship, finance, illness), or internal sources (such as unrealistic expectations or perfectionism)? Evaluate your situation carefully. What are the things you can control? What’s out of your control? What are you willing to let go and release in order to have peace?

Take a few minutes to breathe deeply and center yourself. This is a perfect time to take a break for Intensive Self-Care. Do something to pamper your body, mind and spirit.

DROP
Now that you are calm, take a look at your to-do list. Use The 3-D Principle (Do it, Delegate it, Dump it) to assess each and every task on your list. Dump whatever is not aligned with your long-term goals and core values. Delegate the ones that can be done by others, and only perform the tasks that are aligned with your goals, core values, or can only be done by you.

ROLL
Now that you have pared down your to-do list, let’s roll out an action plan to get things done! I suggest you break down each task on your to-do list to the smallest action step possible. This will give you a flowchart of action steps and a more accurate estimate of time needed to complete each task. Once you have all the action steps determined and know how much time you need, plug them into your calendar.

Occasionally, things don’t go as planned. In order to achieve your goal without stressing yourself out, you need to be willing to roll with the punches. Be flexible about how things get done. When you are totally open and detached from the outcome, sometimes things work out in a way that you would never have imagined.

P.S. “Stop, Drop & Roll Out of Overwhelm” is key #1 in Intensive Care for the Nurturer’s Soul: 7 Keys to Nurture Yourself While Caring for Others written by Hueina Su. This article is adapted from the book. You can order the book here or on Amazon.

P.P.S. Watch Hueina talk about this STOP, DROP & ROLL concept during her keynote speech at an international medical conference in Asia.

Passion and Purpose – Why I Almost Went Postal

There’s nothing like a birthday that makes you pause and reflect on your life. One particular memory stood out for me this year. It was March 21, 2005, just a few days before my birthday. My husband Carey and I officially swore in and became U.S. citizens. It was a long process and so much preparation went into getting our citizenship. So on this day, we were both excited and happy that our efforts had finally paid off, and that we would reap the benefits of better future and more opportunities for us and our children.

On our way home, we were both in high spirit. That’s when it happened.

My husband turned to me and said, “Now that you’ve got your citizenship, you can get a government job, like the post office.” I couldn’t believe what I just heard! I felt my blood was reaching the boiling point, yet I was SO mad that I couldn’t utter a word. Even with my “death stare”, dear hubby seemed totally oblivious (typical man). He continued, “well, you know, you can also consider the bank. They are always hiring tellers.” OUCH! That really hurt my feelings!

You see, I gave up my career as a college counselor when my daughter was about one year old, and my son was born about 2 years later. I was a stay-at-home-mom for a couple years, then started a home-based business and doing freelance jobs. Back in 2005, I had stayed home with our two young children for a few years, and Carey had asked me several times when I would return to work (i.e. a full-time J.O.B.). After staying home for a few years, I wasn’t sure what career I wanted to pursue, and I wasn’t confident that I could return to my previous career. Let’s face it, being a stay-at-home-mom is not a confidence-booster for career-minded high-achieving women. Besides, I wanted to find something that would allow me to work around my children’s schedules. So, a regular 9-to-5 J.O.B. wouldn’t no longer work. I did not want to settle. After months of soul-searching, I still had no clarity about my career path. Until my dear friend Heather told me about life coaching, and I eventually enrolled in iPEC Coaching and became a Certified Empowerment Coach.

On the day I got my citizenship, I was just enrolled in the coaching school. I was so excited about my future career – one that I feel combines my past education, training and experience in nursing, counseling and healing people. So imagine my surprise when dear hubby suggested I find a job at the post office!

To be frank, if it wasn’t because he was driving the car, I would’ve most definitely kicked him where it hurt MOST. And believe me, as a Black Belt in Tae Kwan Do, I have a powerful kick!!

After fuming for a while (you know how women are), I finally blurted out, “I can’t believe you said that!!! Post office? Why don’t I get a job as a grocery store cashier then?” I felt humiliated and hurt. He didn’t believe in me. I didn’t moved all the way from Asia to get my master’s degree, just to end up sorting mails here.

No offense to postal workers. It’s an important and respectable job. It’s just not something that’s aligned with my passion, purpose or talents. I know I’ll become bored and resentful very quickly, and it might just kill what little self-confidence I had left.

The last thing I wanted was to settle and compromise myself. And I’m so glad I didn’t. I became a Certified Empowerment Coach, best-selling author and international keynote speaker. I get to do what I love and make a difference in the world every day. My children, now 16 and 14, are amazing young people and very close to me because I’ve been home with/for them. And my husband Carey has become my biggest fan. Now he totally believes in my vision and support my work in so many ways. I’m truly grateful for him!

How about you? Are your life and work aligned with your passion, purpose and talents? Is your job feeding your soul, or draining your life force?

If you are currently at a job that depletes you, ask yourself why. Are you staying at this job because you are not sure what you really want? Or is it because of fear (fear of failure, fear of success, fear of the unknown etc)? Are you settling because you think that’s being responsible to your family, or, are you using your family as an excuse not to pursue your dream?

Oftentimes we feel that we have to be responsible to our family, at the cost of our own well-being and happiness. Self-sacrifice, as I wrote in my Amazon bestseller Intensive Care for the Nurturer’s Soul, is a virtue for many people, especially heart-centered women. It’s also a surefire way to Self-Care Deficiency Syndrome, a host of physical, emotional and relationship problems. Let me give you a reframe here. If you are sacrificing your core values and well-being, you are not being responsible to yourself – your higher self. Of course, being a parent, some sacrifice and compromises are required. There is constant give-and-take in marriage too. But, there is a difference between healthy give-and-take and complete sacrifice of your happiness, core values, well-being and even who you are. Can you tell the difference?

So, if you are currently at a job that depletes you, what’s the first step you can take to move toward a career that’s more aligned with WHO you are and give you more JOY? Maybe it’s getting clear on what you really want. Maybe you need to take classes or learn new skills for your new career. Maybe you need to polish your resume. Maybe you need to block out time to write or start your business. Or even just allow yourself 10 minutes to daydream. No matter how tiny a baby step you can take, do it. Begin today.

DENVILLE, NJ – December 12, 2011 — Best-selling author, international keynote speaker and certified life coach Hueina Su stepped into spotlight for the Las Vegas red-carpet world premiere of the new personal development film, The Keeper of the Keys, in which she is a co-star with Jack Canfield, Marci Shimoff, and John Gray.

The world premiere of The Keeper of the Keys movie was held on Dec. 8, 2011 at a red-carpet premiere at the Plaza Las Vegas Hotel and Casino in Downtown Las Vegas. The Keeper of the Keys movie is produced by Robin Jay of the Las Vegas Convention Speakers Bureau and TwoBirds, Inc. and directed by revered industry veteran Scott Cervine. An earlier private VIP luncheon was held at The Palm Restaurant in the Forum’s Shop at Caesar’s Place with Jack Canfield, Marci Shimoff and other movie stars as a fundraiser for Volunteers in Medicine, Southern Neveda.

Hueina Su, MS, BSN, CEC, is a mindful wellness and women’s empowerment expert, international keynote speaker, certified life coach, and the best-selling author of Intensive Care for the Nurturer’s Soul: 7 Keys to Nurture Yourself While Caring for Others and the upcoming Peaceful Power: A Prescription for Long-Lasting Inner Peace, True Happiness and Unstoppable Success. Su is the president and founder of Beyond Horizon Coaching in Denville, New Jersey.

“It’s so exciting to walk the red-carpet and see the debut of The Keeper of the Keys. I’m honored to co-star with some of the world’s most famous personal development gurus such as Jack Canfield, Marci Shimoff and John Gray in this new self-help movie,” Su said. “It was a surreal Hollywood movie star experience to see myself on the big screen and be interviewed by TV and radio reporters on the red carpet. I’m humbled by the heartfelt compliments from many women who came up to me afterward to tell me how my story and message moved them.”

Su adds, since the hit movie The Secret released a few years ago, there have been more personal development movies but most are just a collection of talking heads without a compelling story. The Keeper of the Keys is the first movie in the self-help genre to take an innovative, funny approach to the field of personal development aimed to “taking the hell out of self-help.” The movie blends an entertaining fictional story line with unique expert segments featuring profound personal stories and expert advice.

The Keeper of the Keys movie has already earned accolades in the industry. Stephen Simon, co-founder of Spiritual Cinema Circle and acclaimed producer of hit movies such as What Dreams May Come and Somewhere in Time, said, “The Keeper of The Keys is the most innovative and entertaining film of its kind ever made. Wildly original, howlingly funny, fast-paced, and utterly delightful in every way, the film is truly a gift to the world. True to its ad copy, the film takes ‘the hell out of self-help’ and is the new gold standard in its genre. When you see this movie, you will learn, laugh, and clap your hands with joy!” Simon is in the process of licensing the movie DVD for April 2012 release to its members in 65 countries.

The VIP Red Carpet Premiere proved to be just as much fun as the movie itself. Following the screening, an after party was held in the classic Las Vegas showroom and featured an appearance from Steve Connolly as Elvis, live music and dancing, special “Key-tini” cocktails, and Gigi’s Cupcakes.

The KEEPER of the KEYS Star Hueina Su Keynotes on Managing Crisis, Turning Risk Into Opportunity

Best-selling author, inspirational keynote speaker, star of “The Keeper of the Keys” self-help film Hueina Su keynotes on managing crisis and turning risk into opportunity at an International Healthcare Conference.

Hueina Su, MS, BSN, CEC, is a mindful wellness expert, international keynote speaker, transformational leader of The Venus Evolution, and the best-selling author of “Intensive Care for the Nurturer’s Soul: 7 Keys to Nurture Yourself While Caring for Others” and the upcoming “Peaceful Power: A Prescription for Long-Lasting Inner Peace, True Happiness and Unstoppable Success.”

In her keynote address, Su reveals eight invisible sources of inner stress that sabotage people’s self confidence, self esteem, self worth, belief, and faith, and ultimately their work, life, business and relationship.

“It’s critical to put things in perspective when crisis occurs. How you respond to an event will determine the outcome. You can’t change what has happened. But you can reframe the event, ” Su said. “In every crisis lies an opportunity in disguise. You can turn the crisis into an opportunity for breakthrough, not  breakdown.”

Su is a co-star with personal development gurus Jack Canfield, Marci Shimoff and John Gray in a new personal development movie “The Keeper of the Keys,” – the first movie in the self-help genre to take an innovative, funny approach to the field of personal development aimed to taking the “hell” out of “self-help.”

“The Keeper of the Keys” movie has already made an impression on Stephen Simon, cofounder of Spiritual Cinema Circle. After screening a rough cut, Simon, an acclaimed film producer and director, said, “This movie is so current …so relevant … and nothing like it has ever been done before. It represents an extraordinary undertaking that works on every level.” Simon is licensing “The Keeper of the Keys” movie for April 2012 release for Spiritual Cinema Circle.
