Inspirational Speaker and Life Coach Hueina Su Keynotes to Breast Cancer Patients and Survivors on Taming Invisible Chaos and Relieving Stress

 

Mindful wellness expert, inspirational speaker and life coach Hueina Su was the keynote speaker addressing the invisible chaos and root causes of stress to breast cancer patients and survivors at a breast cancer conference.

 

DENVILLE, NJ – April 16, 2011 – Coping with the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer is a very stressful journey for cancer patients and survivors, complicated by fears, anxiety, grief, and many emotional issues. Physical and emotional stress can wreck havoc in cancer patients’ immune function and healing process. Learning how to cope with stress effectively is critical for their recovery and emotional well-being.

In a keynote address at a breast cancer survivorship conference, inspirational speaker and life coach Hueina Su helps one hundred breast cancer patients, survivors and caregivers identify their invisible chaos and root causes of stress and offers coping strategies to remain calm, peaceful and confident.

“Most conventional stress management techniques are important and beneficial, but they often provide temporary relief for the symptoms of stress, not the root cause of the stress,” Su says. “For example, yoga, massage, meditation are feel-good techniques. But stress will come back within an hour or two if the root cause of stress isn’t addressed.”

Su adds that this is why conventional stress management alone does not work. There are other forces that affect your level of stress, and in many cases, these invisible forces are the root cause of your stress. “I call these forces the invisible chaos. They are invisible like electricity, but you can experience their effects. You have to learn how to tame your invisible chaos. Otherwise, you won’t have long-lasting stress relief,” Su says.

Su pointed out eight common invisible chaos causing emotional and physical stress:

  1. I’m not good enough
  2. I’m not worthy
  3. Chronic people-pleasing
  4. Perfectionism
  5. Four fears, of success, failure, judgment, rejection
  6. Constantly comparing yourself
  7. Ghosts from the past
  8. Self-limiting beliefs

Since June 2010, Su has been leading a Mindful Wellness Coaching and Stress Management Program at Sparta Cancer Center in Sparta, New Jersey. Over 80 cancer patients and caregivers have participated and benefited from Su’s stress relief coaching program.

“The well-being of cancer caregivers and patient care staff is just as important as that of cancer patients. Having worked with cancer and other terminally ill patients as a registered nurse, I experienced first-hand the high level of stress and its negative impact on physical health and emotional well-being. 3) National Stress Prevention Month

Last week I was invited to “shadow” an oncologist and his staff for a day at his cancer center. The good doctor wanted me to design stress management programs for his patients and staff. I applaud his proactive approach to help his patients heal and keep his staff healthy. Research has shown that practicing relaxation techniques (such as yoga, meditation, tai chi) on a regular basis can affect the cancer-related gene expressions. In other words, if you practice relaxation techniques, even if you are genetically pre-disposed to have cancer, you will reduce your risk of these genes being “turned on” to develop cancer in your body. Something to think about!

Another new study published by Cancer Prevention Research found that breast cancer gene expression was enhanced and tumor growth increased, following social isolation. We all know the importance of social support for our emotional well-being and stress relief. This study showed that social suppport also affects our physical health.

4) Powerful Women! Powerful You! Featured in Daily Record

Which brings me to another exciting news to share. Last Friday I spoke at the first annual The Women’s Institute Conference at Bergen Community College. It was a great success and I’m honored to be part of the initial planning committee for this important women’s initiative. It’s inspiring to hear great women speakers such as Rachel Simmons (author of The Curse of The Good Girl), Barbara Frankel (Editor of DiversityInc. Magazine), as well as other workshop speakers. I also enjoyed meeting amazing women and catching up with old friends. There is much power when women gather and support one another. Do you have your own “tribe” that you can turn to for support?

One of my favorite women’s groups is the Powerful You! Women’s Netowrk Denville NJ chapter, which I co-facilitate with my good friend Christina Santiago. And guess what? We are in the news AGAIN! The Real Root Cause of Your Stress

j0426560Have you ever wondered why you could never overcome your stress?

Granted, we live in a world where chaos abounds. Stress seems to be inevitable and inescapable for most modern men and women. However, I believe that most people cannot overcome their stress because they are unaware, or have not taken the necessary steps to address the real root cause of their stress.

When it comes to stress, most people focus on the external stressors such as stress from job, finance, health, traffic, marriage, other relationships, etc. However, there are other forces that affect your level of stress, and in many cases, these invisible forces are the root cause of your stress. I call these forces the Invisible Chaos. They are invisible like electricity, but you can experience their effects. While it is important to learn how to manage the external sources of stress, it’s even more important to address the underlying, invisible root cause of your stress. Otherwise, you won’t have long-lasting stress relief.

What happens is, most people try to reduce these external stressors, without really addressing the underlying root cause of their stress. It’s as if putting on a band-aid when you have an infection. Not only will this not treat the infection, it will even cause more problems due to delay of treatment.

My recent stress management research validated this. Out of all the survey participants, 59.5% has the stress level of 6 or up (based on a scale of 1 to 10 where 10 being the most stressed), and about 10% has the stress level of 9 or 10. When asked how effective their current stress management methods are, 71.7% said their methods are somewhat effective but only provide temporary relief. It’s worth noting that 13.2% said their methods are not effective at all, and even cause more problems for them. When I cross-reference these participants’ stress management methods, they use unhealthy coping behaviors such as denial, procrastination, emotional eating, smoking, drinking, temper tantrums, gambling, drugs. No wonder they end up with more problems! Can you relate?

If you have tried many strategies to relieve your stress with little or no long-lasting relief, you might not be addressing the root cause of your stress, which very likely is one or more of the 8 Invisible Chaos that I have identified.
