Who Do You Think You Are?

“Who are YOU?” said the Caterpillar. This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, “I — I hardly know, sir, just at present — at least I know who I WAS when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.”

Who do you think you are? You must have heard this question directed at you many times (perhaps even several times a day). Sometimes it’s from someone who is, for whatever reason, not pleased (or downright furious) with you. It could be your spouse, your boss/coworker, your teenage kids, your patients/students/customers, or even total strangers. Maybe you did or say something they didn’t like. Maybe you didn’t live up to their expectations or go by their rules. Maybe you tried to be innovative, instead of following the conventional wisdom. Maybe you told them you wanted to pursue your dream, claim your expertise, start a new business, write a book, go back to school, change the world, or just do something nice for yourself for a change. Maybe you tried to speak your mind or show your true colors. Maybe you wanted to blaze your own trail, instead of following the tradition. Maybe you just wanted to be yourself and feel comfortable in your own skin.

You might even hear the question “Who (the heck) do you think YOU are?” combined with finger-pointing, eye-rolling or other gestures. You might feel angry, hurt, embarrassed, misunderstood, guilty, ashamed, insecure, unworthy or unloved. Then you either fight back, lash out at someone else, or withdraw. You give up what you want for what THEY want.

Sometimes, the question doesn’t come from other people. What you hear is a demanding, condescending voice from “The Judge” in your head. He is sitting high up, mad as hell, pounding on his gavel, reaching forward and pointing a finger SO close to your nose. “Who do you think YOU are?” he demands with authority. It doesn’t matter how old or accomplished you are, all of a sudden, you lost your calm and confidence. You feel so small. You just want to shrink down to the ground and be invisible. You retreat back to your comfort zone and status quo, even though deep inside you feel miserable and suffocated.

I bet you are familiar with the voices in your head. In my last post, How to Find Peace When You Feel Out of Control, I talked about the cynical, nasty comments from my “Evil Stepmother”, calling me lazy and shaming me when I was sick with a bad cold and decided to rest. Yup, they tend to take a cheap shot at you when you are weakened. That’s the way Gremlins work. Even I am not immune. The Gremlins are part of the Invisible Chaos that’s the underlying root cause of most people’s stress, anxiety, self-doubt, low self-esteem and self-sabotage. That’s why it’s so important to learn how to tame your Invisible Chaos. And this is not a do-it-once-and-you-are-done kind of deal. Every day we encounter many challenges and chaos in our life, that could trigger the Invisible Chaos that’s lurking in our subconscious mind and at our cellular level. You need to learn how to tame your Invisible Chaos and make it a regular practice for your long-lasting inner peace, true self-confidence, and optimal success. Sometimes, you might hear yourself ask “Who am I?” and found yourself as stumped as Alice in Wonderland. You have changed so many times, like Alice, and you are not sure who you TRULY are any more. You might know who you WERE before…. before you got married, before you had kids, before you got laid off, before you gave up your 6-figure corporate executive job to be a stay-at-home-mom, before you got divorced, before you gained all that weight, before you gave up a secure job with benefit to start your own business, before you had cancer, before you turned 40 (or 50 or 60), before you lost a loved one, etc. But now, you are not so sure any more. Maybe you had achieved a great deal before, but now, you question your every decision. You used to be confident and now you no longer trust yourself.

After major life challenges and transitions, your confidence and self-esteem can take a beating. But sometimes, even without any major challenge or setback, you could still gradually lose your self. Especially when you don’t honor yourself completely, you end up giving your true self away little by little. Then one day you look in the mirror, and you can barely recognize yourself.

I’ve seen and worked with many people like that. They lost their self-esteem, confidence, passion and purpose. They don’t know who they are any more. It’s truly tragic. They ask: “Who am I when I’m no longer being/doing/having xyz?” and “How can I still be loveable/worthy when I’m no longer being/doing/having xyz?” Sounds familiar?

These people have identity crisis. The thing is, change of identity, even when it’s due to a positive change (such as getting married, becoming a parent, losing weight) can be very stressful, especially when you are very attached to that identity.

The antidote? Remember the truth of who you are. You are NOT your income, your diploma or job title. You are NOT your possessions, your social status, or your achievements. You are NOT your body, your illness or the roles you play. Your mind or intelligence is not who you are, either.

There is a part of you that does not change, no matter how much your appearance, income, marital status or other circumstances change. It will never diminish, no matter how many challenges you encounter or how many mistakes you make. In fact, nothing can destroy it. This part of you knows that you are a beloved darling princess (or prince) of the Universe, a divine child of God. This is your True Self, your Higher Self. When you are deeply rooted in your True Self, your essence, nobody and nothing in the world can disturb your inner peace, and you are most powerful. That’s the Peaceful Power I’ve been talking about. When you claim your Peaceful Power, what other people think of you is irrelevant. You listen to your inner wisdom instead of blindly following other people’s rules. You are totally at peace, grounded and naturally confident. You know you are worthy of all the love, joy and abundance in the world. And you do not need to change yourself or prove anything to anyone, in order to deserve that. You can FINALLY be yourself. As the adage goes, the truth will set you free.

What do Butterflies, Little Girl and Construction Truck Have in Common?

I can’t believe the 2-week summit is coming to an end so soon! Time flies when we are having fun and we really ROCKED it!! :) What started out as a small still voice, a divine message I heard – “Help the little girl” – blossomed into this amazing transformational event for heart-centered, high-achieving V.E.N.U.S. women around the world. I’m so glad I listened to that voice and followed my heart — despite my doubts and fears. I couldn’t have done it without my AMAZING speakers who I have the honor to call my friends, colleagues, soul sisters (and brothers).

Divine synchronisities abound before and during The Venus Evolution Global Telesummit and I’d like to share some of them with you. If you are connected with me on Facebook, you might know that I’ve been fascinated by butterflies, particularly Monarch, and I’ve raised a few at home, and bought 3 more chrysalises in October. Well, during the week of 10/10 (“perfect ten” has special meaning in Chinese culture… “everything is beautiful, perfect and complete”), I was scheduled to interview Maryam Webster, Lisa Walker and Ken Stone for the Telesummit. Three days IN A ROW, at the EXACT time I was supposed to call for the interview, one Monarch butterfly hatched from its chrysalis. I shared this with Maryam, Lisa and Ken when I called, and we were all amazed by this beautiful gift from the Divine. This Telesummit is about women’s transformation and empowerment. What better symbol is there than the beautiful and powerful Monarch butterflies?

Another one of my favorite divine synchronisities during the summit is when Christine Kloser and I were on the call, talking about a huge business decision she just made that required full surrender to grace, and, a construction truck drove by her window, with HUGE letters painted on the side that read “In God We Trust.” I just love INSTANT divine messages like that, don’t you? :)

Are You Frozen in Fear in the Face of Change?

When fear grabs you by your throat, your emotions hijack your mind, all reasoning is out the window, will you hang on to the cliff for your dear life (and eventually fall to your demise), or will you take the leap and SOAR?

Lately it seems like everywhere I go, everyone I talk to is facing some kind of change or transition, and the predominant feeling, whether explicitly expressed or not, is FEAR. In the last week alone, I’ve spoken to business owners trying to survive recession, professionals in career transitions, a doctor facing a hospital merger, breast cancer survivors trying to adapt to “the new normal”, a movie producer embarking on her new movie production, and a few business women trying to decide whether to invest in coaching and training, etc. The common thread is, everyone is facing some kind of change and the unknown. Old chapters are closing, old relationships and security are fading into history, while new opportunities and challenges are rising on the horizon, with uncharted paths waiting to be explored. While a few are excited about the new chapters and promises in their life and/or business, most of them are filled with SO much anxiety about the impeding changes and transitions. They are stressed, overwhelmed, fearful of an unknown future, afraid of making mistakes, stuck in analysis paralysis, worried excessively about the worst-case scenarios, losing sleep, and about to snap. Some told me flat-out that they are frozen in fear — unable to make any decisions or take any actions, feeling scared, stuck, confused, desperate, powerless and even hopeless. They feel like they are standing at the edge of a cliff, and any mis-step, even a tiny one, could result in falling to a horrible death. So, they just stand there, unable to breathe, unable to move.

Does this sound familiar? Are you holding your breath reading this? OK, take a D-E-E-P breath in and let it ALL out.

I know that hold-your-breath-until-your-face-turns-blue feeling, because I’ve been there many times myself. Now, I consider myself a veteran of change, and have thrived in many dramatic changes and challenges in my life, such as moving from Asia to the U.S. in my twenties (speaking little English and knowing almost no one here); transitioning and thriving in many industries and professions; coping with my husband’s job loss when he was the sole bread-winner and we had a house and 2 kids under age 4; starting my own business when I had no clue what I was doing; moving and living in 4 states in 6 calendar years (with two babies in tow); transforming myself from a painfully shy, insecure, suicidal young girl to an international keynote speaker and best-selling author; winning my Black Belt and 8 gold medals despite my injuries and fears; recovering from various illnesses, surgeries and a breast cancer scare a few years ago. I can go on and on…..

You get the picture. I’ve been through A LOT of changes and I’m REALLY good at adapting and thriving in change. But, I’m not immune to fear, either. In fact, I’ve had many frozen-in-fear, scared-to-death, on-my-knees moments. Probably more so than many people.

Change is definitely in the air. Buddha said, “The only constant in life is change.” There’s no escaping from it whether you’re royalty or a mere mortal. So, the question is, how well can you deal with change? And what do you do when you are frozen in fear?

When you are faced with change, you need to be able to think clearly, make the right decisions, and take swift actions. Problem is, when fear grabs you by your throat and your emotions hijack your mind, all reasoning is out the window. Your ability to think clearly and act accordingly might be diminished to ZERO. Like the person standing, or even worse, HANGING, at the edge of the cliff, you are frozen in fear, unable to think or move.

In one of the Indiana Jones movies, Indiana Jones had to cross a canyon to retrieve the Holy Grail to save his father. However, when they arrived at the top of the canyon, there was no bridge or any pathway across the canyon. The ancient scripture showed a man crossing the canyon, seemingly floating in mid-air. Time is running out for his father, and he couldn’t find another transportation to cross the canyon. At that moment, he had to go on faith, and faith alone. He had to make a DECISION and trust. So, even though he was scared, as any normal human being would at the edge of a deep gorge, Indiana Jones closed his eyes, and took a step into the air. Surprisingly, he didn’t fall to the bottom of the canyon. Instead, he landed on a narrow rock bridge that was totally invisible before. He safely traveled on this rock bridge across the canyon and saved his father at the end.

Sometimes when you are overcome by fear, you can’t see the path to safety and success. All you can see, all you focus on, is the risks and danger. You keep thinking about the worse-case scenarios. Like the cliff-hanger, you just want to hang on to what you know (or so you thought) to be safe with a death grip (pun intended), not knowing the “path to safety” might be just a step away. The famous psychologist Abraham Maslow wrote, “You will either step forward into growth or backward into safety.” Ironically, what you perceive to be safe (i.e. hanging on to the cliff), might ultimately lead to your demise. You can take a step in faith, find an alternative path, or, you can insist on hanging on to the edge of the cliff until you can no longer hold on. And then what?

Know that change is inevitable and there’s always a risk involved whether you choose to move forward or not. The Chinese word “crisis” consists of two characters: “risk” and “opportunity”. The bigger the crisis, the greater the risk, and the greater the opportunity too. I was reminded of this lesson recently when I almost decided to turn down possibly the greatest opportunity (so far) for my business. I was focusing on what I perceive as a crisis because of the great risk involved in this project, and as a result, I was very anxious, overwhelmed and unable to make a decision. I was frozen in fear, until I talked with my coach, who reminded me to keep my eyes on the possibility and opportunity the change (project) will bring, instead of the risks and dangers involved. It was like a heavy boulder lifted off my chest and I can finally breathe and think again. Sometimes when you are so deep in anxiety and fear, you really need someone who can see objectively and clearly to point out the right thinking and right direction for you. A professional coach can do just that for you.

As the famous quote by John Burroughs goes, “Leap and the net will appear.” Learn to trust yourself and have faith in the Universe. Know that you live in a loving Universe. If you are following your heart, aligned with your passion and purpose, the Universe will conspire to support you. When you leap in faith, the net will appear, or you might find out that you’ve been wearing a parachute on your back all along. But, you’ll never know until you take the leap. Remember the cliff-hanger — the longer you wait, the less options you’ll have, and the higher risks for you. So, make a DECISION and take ACTION now.

Breast Cancer Awareness Conference speaker and life coach Hueina Su keynotes to breast cancer survivors on connection of negative thoughts and emotions with stress on the body.

 

DENVILLE, NJ – April 24, 2011 – Physical and emotional stress can wreck havoc in breast cancer patients’ immune function and healing process when coping with cancer diagnosis and treatment. Negative thoughts and emotions can be further complicated by fears, anxiety, grief and stress.

In a keynote address at a breast cancer awareness conference, motivational speaker and life coach Hueina Su helps one hundred breast cancer patients, survivors and caregivers connect their negative thoughts and emotions with stress on their body.

Hueina Su, MS, BSN, CEC, is an inspirational keynote speaker, best-selling author, mindful wellness expert, certified life coach, and the president of Beyond Horizon Coaching based in Denville, New Jersey.

“An average person has over 60,000 thoughts a day or one thought a second. Ninety-five percent of the thoughts are repeated from yesterday. Eighty percent of the repeated thoughts are negative,” Su said. “It’s important to recognize the fact that our thoughts affect our actions or inactions and perceived reality at a very deep subconscious level.”

Su demonstrated how negative thoughts affect a person’s strength using so-called muscle testing. It’s a method of applied kinesiology. “When you’re thinking positive thoughts, you are strong and able to resist externally applied force. Conversely, if you’re thinking negative thoughts, your strength starts to decrease,” Su said. “That’s a huge impact in your strength just by a change of thought. It’s a mind-over-matter, thought-over-body kind of phenomenon.”

“There are other forces that affect your level of stress. These invisible forces are the root causes of physical and emotional stress that I call “the invisible chaos.” They are invisible like electricity, but you can experience their effects. You have to learn how to tame your invisible chaos. Otherwise, you won’t have long-lasting stress relief,” Su said.

“Your thoughts are very powerful. Your thoughts turn into actions. Your actions become results. Your results are your reality. So mind your own thoughts,” Su said.

Since June 2010, Su has been leading a Mindful Wellness Coaching and Stress Management Program at Sparta Cancer Center in Sparta, New Jersey. Over 80 cancer patients and caregivers have participated and benefited from Su’s stress relief coaching program.

“The well-being of cancer caregivers and patient care staff is just as important as that of cancer patients. Having worked with cancer and other terminally ill patients as a registered nurse, I experienced first-hand the high level of stress and its negative impact on physical health and emotional well-being. This is why I wrote my best-selling book Intensive Care for the Nurturer’s Soul: 7 Keys to Nurture Yourself While Caring for Others,” Su said.
