Who Do You Think You Are?

“Who are YOU?” said the Caterpillar. This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, “I — I hardly know, sir, just at present — at least I know who I WAS when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.”
– Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

Who do you think you are? You must have heard this question directed at you many times (perhaps even several times a day). Sometimes it’s from someone who is, for whatever reason, not pleased (or downright furious) with you. It could be your spouse, your boss/coworker, your teenage kids, your patients/students/customers, or even total strangers. Maybe you did or say something they didn’t like. Maybe you didn’t live up to their expectations or go by their rules. Maybe you tried to be innovative, instead of following the conventional wisdom. Maybe you told them you wanted to pursue your dream, claim your expertise, start a new business, write a book, go back to school, change the world, or just do something nice for yourself for a change. Maybe you tried to speak your mind or show your true colors. Maybe you wanted to blaze your own trail, instead of following the tradition. Maybe you just wanted to be yourself and feel comfortable in your own skin.

You might even hear the question “Who (the heck) do you think YOU are?” combined with finger-pointing, eye-rolling or other gestures. You might feel angry, hurt, embarrassed, misunderstood, guilty, ashamed, insecure, unworthy or unloved. Then you either fight back, lash out at someone else, or withdraw. You give up what you want for what THEY want.

Sometimes, the question doesn’t come from other people. What you hear is a demanding, condescending voice from “The Judge” in your head. He is sitting high up, mad as hell, pounding on his gavel, reaching forward and pointing a finger SO close to your nose. “Who do you think YOU are?” he demands with authority. It doesn’t matter how old or accomplished you are, all of a sudden, you lost your calm and confidence. You feel so small. You just want to shrink down to the ground and be invisible. You retreat back to your comfort zone and status quo, even though deep inside you feel miserable and suffocated.

I bet you are familiar with the voices in your head. In my last post, How to Find Peace When You Feel Out of Control, I talked about the cynical, nasty comments from my “Evil Stepmother”, calling me lazy and shaming me when I was sick with a bad cold and decided to rest. Yup, they tend to take a cheap shot at you when you are weakened. That’s the way Gremlins work. Even I am not immune. The Gremlins are part of the Invisible Chaos that’s the underlying root cause of most people’s stress, anxiety, self-doubt, low self-esteem and self-sabotage. That’s why it’s so important to learn how to tame your Invisible Chaos. And this is not a do-it-once-and-you-are-done kind of deal. Every day we encounter many challenges and chaos in our life, that could trigger the Invisible Chaos that’s lurking in our subconscious mind and at our cellular level. You need to learn how to tame your Invisible Chaos and make it a regular practice for your long-lasting inner peace, true self-confidence, and optimal success. By the way, if you don’t know the 8 Invisible Chaos and how to tame them, make sure you sign up for my FREE Taming the Invisible Chaos 7-part video & audio course.

Sometimes, you might hear yourself ask “Who am I?” and found yourself as stumped as Alice in Wonderland. You have changed so many times, like Alice, and you are not sure who you TRULY are any more. You might know who you WERE before…. before you got married, before you had kids, before you got laid off, before you gave up your 6-figure corporate executive job to be a stay-at-home-mom, before you got divorced, before you gained all that weight, before you gave up a secure job with benefit to start your own business, before you had cancer, before you turned 40 (or 50 or 60), before you lost a loved one, etc. But now, you are not so sure any more. Maybe you had achieved a great deal before, but now, you question your every decision. You used to be confident and now you no longer trust yourself.

After major life challenges and transitions, your confidence and self-esteem can take a beating. But sometimes, even without any major challenge or setback, you could still gradually lose your self. Especially when you don’t honor yourself completely, you end up giving your true self away little by little. Then one day you look in the mirror, and you can barely recognize yourself.

I’ve seen and worked with many people like that. They lost their self-esteem, confidence, passion and purpose. They don’t know who they are any more. It’s truly tragic. They ask: “Who am I when I’m no longer being/doing/having xyz?” and “How can I still be loveable/worthy when I’m no longer being/doing/having xyz?” Sounds familiar?

These people have identity crisis. The thing is, change of identity, even when it’s due to a positive change (such as getting married, becoming a parent, losing weight) can be very stressful, especially when you are very attached to that identity.

The antidote? Remember the truth of who you are. You are NOT your income, your diploma or job title. You are NOT your possessions, your social status, or your achievements. You are NOT your body, your illness or the roles you play. Your mind or intelligence is not who you are, either.

There is a part of you that does not change, no matter how much your appearance, income, marital status or other circumstances change. It will never diminish, no matter how many challenges you encounter or how many mistakes you make. In fact, nothing can destroy it. This part of you knows that you are a beloved darling princess (or prince) of the Universe, a divine child of God. This is your True Self, your Higher Self. When you are deeply rooted in your True Self, your essence, nobody and nothing in the world can disturb your inner peace, and you are most powerful. That’s the Peaceful Power I’ve been talking about. When you claim your Peaceful Power, what other people think of you is irrelevant. You listen to your inner wisdom instead of blindly following other people’s rules. You are totally at peace, grounded and naturally confident. You know you are worthy of all the love, joy and abundance in the world. And you do not need to change yourself or prove anything to anyone, in order to deserve that. You can FINALLY be yourself. As the adage goes, the truth will set you free.

Want to learn how to claim your Peaceful Power? I will be announcing a group coaching program to help you do just that very soon, so stay tuned. In the meantime, make sure you sign up for my FREE Claim Your Peaceful Power Success Activation Kit, so you can start your first steps, and be on the priority list to receive advance notice about my upcoming program.

How to Find Peace When You Feel Out of Control

There are times when you feel like your life is going against your best intention or planning, and you are losing control. It’s easy to feel anxiety, fear, self-doubt, anger and other strong emotions. How do you find inner peace when many things seem to be out of your control? That’s the lesson I’ve been learning this past week – from an unexpected cold that felt like the flu, teenage driver and a school bomb threat.

Early last week, my daughter came home from school, sick as a dog. She is usually very healthy, so this was unusual for her. The weather has been very unstable recently, and colds and flu are going around. As a seasoned Dr. Mom, I immediately whipped out all my powerful healing tools, including Young Living Essential Oils and ZeroPoint bio-energetic lasers and intention stones to help her balance and reset her bio-energetic system, boost her immunity, and lesson her discomfort (I’ll share about these AMAZING healing tools with you in the near future). She fell asleep in the middle of the bio-energetic reset protocol, and after a few hours of deep sleep, woke up feeling MUCH better.

Meanwhile, I myself was feeling a little bit under the weather that day. After tending to my daughter, I started to go down the hill, FAST. Care-giving is very straining, physically and emotionally, as I had experienced and shared in my book Intensive Care for the Nurturer’s Soul. Still, I was fighting the cold with every ounce of my strength and will. I did NOT want to get sick at all. I did all the holistic and bio-energetic healing protocols that I used on my daughter, but, I was not feeling better.

I was dragging myself for about two days, trying to get things done in my business and around the house. I couldn’t control my body, which frustrated me big time. At the same time, I was beating myself up for getting sick and losing precious time. I got frustrated and angry that those healing tools did not work as effective this time. The worked wonders before. So, what’s wrong with ME? My “Evil Stepsister” chimed in: “What a disgrace! You’re an expert in self-care and mindful wellness. How can you get sick?! What will other people think when they find out?!” And my “Evil Stepmother” called me lazy, when I decided not to send out my e-zine last Friday. I was like, “WHOA, time out! I’m not lazy! I’m not feeling well and I deserve to rest.”

It finally dawned on me that I was resisting the reality, instead of being in the present moment and accepting “what is”. What you resist, persists. I was fighting with the reality that I had a bad cold and I needed (and deserved) to rest. In addition, the false belief that “I shouldn’t get sick at all” robbed my inner peace and created more stress in my physical and emotional body. No wonder none of those healing tools worked. No wonder I wasn’t getting better.

The reality is, I’m ill, and it’s OK to be ill from time to time. I’m only human, and this is part of the human experience. When I finally accepted what is without judgment, I told my Evil Stepmother and Stepsister to shut up, closed my office and allowed myself to rest as much as I could. My body responded and began to heal. It’s taken longer than I thought, and I’ve learned that you can’t rush healing. Everyone’s body is different. I’m learning to be more patient and kind to myself.

The second lesson came last weekend, when my daughter finished her 6-hour driving lessons and got her driving permit. I don’t know where “teenage driver” ranks on the top 10 stress and anxiety list, but I’m guessing it’s pretty high for any parent. She was over-the-moon excited and ready to get on the road, but, I was far from ready. My husband is braver than I am. He took her out driving around town the next day, and even let her drive him to school (only 2 blocks from home) on Monday. Both the driving instructor and my husband said that she did a great job, although I was still skeptical. In my mind, she is still my little baby girl. She only has 6 hours of lesson. Can she really drive on the road? Shouldn’t we be practicing in an empty parking lot (for a few months) first?

The next day, I was going to pick up my son from school when she enthusiastically asked, “Mommy, can I drive?” My first reaction was, “You want to drive my minivan? Are you sure? It’s much bigger than daddy’s car.” I wanted to say no, but, knowing that it was my fear talking, I decided to say yes instead. How will she be able to learn and get good at driving, if I don’t give her a chance? Here’s an opportunity for me to check what she has learned and teach her what I know. So, we got on the road, as I tried as hard as I could to look calm and relaxed. The worst thing I could do was to make her nervous by being a nervous wreck myself. To my surprise, even though she was brand new to driving, she had a fairly stable handle on the steering wheel, and she was being very careful. I’ve seen some new drivers who are much more nervous and unstable than she is. We drove all the way to school, picked up my son, and to my surprise, I offered for her to drive all of us to the grocery store too, which is on the opposite side of the town.

When we got home safely from the grocery store, she happily exclaimed, “YAY! We are ALIVE!” and I replied “Hallelujah!!” and we all laughed. Apparently she needs a lot more practice on braking and gauging the distance for turning, changing lanes, etc. but she will get better with time and practice, and I can help her with that. As long as my husband or I stay in the car with her, I think she can do well and stay safe. Come September she will get her full drivers license, and she won’t need us to drive with her. The thought of her driving somewhere without us or any grownup supervision is still nerve-wrecking for me, but, I’m going to take it one step at a time. Right now, there’s still a lot I can do to help her get ready. So when that day comes, and she goes out without me, hopefully she will remember what I’ve taught her and know what to do to keep herself safe.

As if a teenage driver is not nerve-wrecking enough, my 3rd lesson came yesterday, when I got a voicemail from the superintendent of my son’s school district that my son’s middle school was in lockdown. Half an hour later, the 2nd voicemail came, saying the lockdown was over, police just left and the kids were going to lunch. There was no explanation of WHY the school was locked down and I was visiting a Buddhist/Taoist temple in New York City when this happened, which means it would’ve taken me a few hours before I could get to my son’s school. As it turned out, the school was locked down due to a bomb threat!! In fact, they received 2 bomb threats 2 days in a row. Talk about nerve-wrecking!! Fortunately, all is well, and the police will be monitoring the campus for the next couple of weeks.

As I shared this incident on Facebook, I found out from one of my co-stars in “The Keeper of the Keys” movie Laura Carpenter-Vobornik that her daughters go to Chardon High School where the shootings shocked the nation on February 27 (fortunately her daughters are safe). The severity of the bomb threat in my son’s school slowed sunk in. It was so surreal to think that something so terrible could happen in your child’s school, and yet, I realized that we are all vulnerable to random violence, accidents and unspeakable tragedies like the Chardon shootings. In my case, there were several blessings, though. First and foremost, the bomb threat was a false alarm. Second, I somehow didn’t hear the first call, so, I got both voicemail messages at the same time (after the lockdown was over). If I had gotten the first message right away, I would’ve freaked out!! Last but not least, because I was at the temple, I was able to pray to the Tao/Buddha and surrender my fears to him. That made a huge difference! Even though I didn’t know the details about the lockdown, I got the peace of mind knowing that he is safe and all is well.

The next morning after he went to school, I got that panic feeling again, worrying whether they will have another bomb threat or lockdown. Again, I had to spend extra time in meditation and surrender to the Divine.

This, I realized, is a process I’ll need to repeat, over and over.

So, how do you find peace when you feel out of control? I hope you take away a few lessons from my story:

1. Accept what is without judgment. It’s no use to argue, deny or reject the reality. Resisting it will only create more resistance, stress, anxiety, anger or destructive behaviors. Blaming yourself or others will not help, either.

2. You can’t rush things. Everything works on divine timing, not on your schedule. Sometimes despite your best efforts, you don’t seem to get anywhere. But, if you stick to it a little longer, you’ll have a breakthrough or another door will open. Learn to be patient and trust the process.

3. Do your best and surrender the rest. You can only do your best. When things are not going according to your plan, and you are feeling out of control, know that there is a higher purpose in everything. Learn to trust that everything is in divine order and things will work out for your highest good, even when it appears the opposite.

4. Be patient and kind to yourself. Beating yourself up does not help the situation. If you’re not feeling well, do whatever you need to heal yourself. By all means, take a nap if you need to. Take your time. Your health is the top priority for your own well-being and your long-term success. Remember, you are irreplaceable!

Red Balloon and a Message from Kwan Yin The Goddess of Compassion

There are encounters in life that you know, in the core of your being, are more than coincidental. There are connections that you know last more than a lifetime.

She has always been a part of my life, for as long as I could remember, at least for this lifetime. But, it wasn’t until recently that I’m realizing, slowly, her significance to me. Last night, I got to meet her “live” for the first time, and my heart was filled with so much love, peace, joy and gratitude. All day long today, I’m in this elevated vibration and I feel like a part of me is still somewhere “out there” with her.

I’m referring to Kwan Yin, the Goddess of Compassion, a revered Buddhist Goddess from China.

Actually, I’ve met her before, although last night was my first time meeting her through someone who can channel her. Born and raised in Taiwan, I’m no stranger to Kwan Yin. My parents have a beautiful white ceramic Kwan Yin statue as well as a sculpted jade mural of her on our family altar. For as long as I could remember, every morning and night, in addition to all major holidays, we would say our prayers to Buddha, Kwan Yin, other gods and our ancestors. Interestingly, Kwan Yin was (and still is) the main god on our family altar, where Buddha (more specifically, there are 2 Laughing Buddhas) took the “second seat”. Come to think of it, that’s quite interesting. Perhaps I should ask my parents why.

Kwan Yin is the female form of the Buddhist Bodhisattva Avalokitasvara. In China and Taiwan, she is said to be the protector of fishermen and practically anyone who would call for her. She voluntarily gave up her own enlightenment until she could ease all suffering in the world. The name Kwan Yin (or Guanyin) is short for Guanshiyin (觀世音) in Chinese, which literally means “Observing the Sounds (or Cries) of the World.”

To me, Kwan Yin is so peaceful and beautiful. Even as a child, I was drawn to her peaceful presence. And, anyone who has 1,000 eyes and 1,000 arms, rides a dragon, and can help everyone all at once, is definitely powerful. Hey, I guess it’s no coincidence why I came up with “Reclaiming the Peaceful, Powerful & Beautiful You” as the theme of The Venus Evolution Global Telesummit last year! :)

Growing up, Kwan Yin was a part of my everyday life, and I’ve always loved her, but after I moved away from home, I kind of lost touch with her. I didn’t feel particularly close to her until last year. When I took a class about White Tara, the Goddess of Compassion in Tibetan Buddhism, I learned that she is one and the same as Kwan Yin in Chinese Buddhism. When I read a particular story about Tara, it dawned on me why I was so drawn to her.

“In this tale there is a young princess who lives in a different world system, millions of years in the past. Her name is Yeshe Dawa, which means ‘Moon of Primordial Awareness’. For quite a number of aeons she makes offerings to the Buddha of that world system, whose name was Tonyo Drupa. She receives special instruction from him concerning bodhicitta — the heart-mind of a bodhisattva. After doing this, some monks approach her and suggest that because of her level of attainment she should next pray to be reborn as a male to progress further. At this point she lets the monks know in no uncertain terms that from the point of view of Enlightenment it is only ‘weak minded worldlings’ who see gender as a barrier to attaining enlightenment. She sadly notes there have been few who wish to work for the welfare of beings in a female form, though. Therefore she resolves to always be reborn as a female bodhisattva, until samsara is no more. She then stays in a palace in a state of meditation for some ten million years, and the power of this practice releases tens of millions of beings from suffering. As a result of this, Tonyo Drupa tells her she will henceforth manifest supreme bodhi as the Goddess Tārā in many world systems to come.”

With this story in mind, it is interesting to read a quotation from the Dalai Lama about Tārā, spoken at a conference on Compassionate Action in Newport Beach, CA in 1989:

“There is a true feminist movement in Buddhism that relates to the goddess Tārā. Following her cultivation of bodhicitta, the bodhisattva’s motivation, she looked upon the situation of those striving towards full awakening and she felt that there were too few people who attained Buddhahood as women. So she vowed, “I have developed bodhicitta as a woman. For all my lifetimes along the path I vow to be born as a woman, and in my final lifetime when I attain Buddhahood, then, too, I will be a woman.”

When I read that story, I got so emotional and couldn’t stop crying. Somehow I realized, at that moment, that I too had signed a similar soul contract to be a woman for all my lifetimes. Since then, I became fascinated with Kwan Yin and actively sought connection with her. After twenty some years, we were reunited at last.

So, you can imagine how excited I was, when I (quite accidentally) came across this event called “An Evening with Kwan Yin.” Somehow I felt compelled to be there. I had to reschedule a radio interview and some other engagements, so I could free up the entire evening for this meeting. I dug up the jade Kwan Yin necklace that my mom gave me years ago, and put on a beautiful Chinese blouse. As I was getting ready to go, I thought of a lovely book I’ve read about Kwan Yin’s teaching that’s entirely channeled by someone in deep hypnosis. I wondered if she would sound like Kwan Yin in that book. I was excited and a little nervous at the same time.

The meeting was in the basement of a small gift shop called Blu Lotus. When I walked in the door, the first thing I noticed was 3 Kwan Yin statues on a small table facing the entrance, and guess what, I have one of the same statues at home. “There you are,” I thought to myself, “I’m at the right place.” In the small basement, there were about a dozen women gathered in a circle, and Christine, the spiritual teacher, showed us the crystal skulls, which she said Kwan Yin had asked her to bring to this session. Feeling like I was the only one who was clueless, I asked her about the significance of these skulls. She quickly handed the largest one to me, saying “Here, I think you should hold this one.” It’s Kwan Yin’s Lapis Lazuli skull, Isis. Holding the skull, I wasn’t sure what to do. I wish I could tell you that I felt or heard something, but I didn’t. Oh well. Maybe next time.

Christine explained to us what would happen in a channeling session, and asked us to be respectful when Kwan Yin arrives. Then she crossed her legs and bowed her head down in meditation. About 5 minutes later she slowly raised her head and began to speak. Her demeanor and voice changed. Kwan Yin was very soft-spoken and at first I could barely hear her, especially because someone else was talking and laughing in the next room. I pleaded, silently, “Please Kwan Yin, let me hear you.” Luckily, after a short while, those ladies finished their meeting and left. We could finally focus on Kwan Yin’s teaching. Still, her voice was so soft and low that I was struggling to hear her words. Honestly, I don’t remember everything she said. Her voice kind of put me in a trance, and maybe she did that on purpose. Either that, or my short-term memory was not working so well. Haha!

What I do remember is that we need to cultivate the “heart consciousness”, i.e. shifting from our head to our heart. Kwan Yin said that we spend way too much time in our head, and don’t trust our own heart and our intuition. She put a silk lotus flower over her heart and told us to open our heart like the lotus flower. She stressed the importance of love and compassion — both for others and for ourselves. Actually, she said many times to love yourself, trust yourself and listen to your heart. I chuckled as she said that she doesn’t understand our modern world, which is so different from the 14th century when she lived on earth. She talked about the “iron horse” we drive and the rectangular box with pictures and sound that everybody is so obsessed with. The Goddess has a great sense of humor. She instructed us to live in the present moment, because that’s the only moment that’s real. Release the guilt and shame from the past that no longer serve us. She told us that each one of us was called there, because we were pure-hearted. All of us are on the right path. We need to have faith and trust ourselves.

When I got home, I was tired but felt much lighter. I remember when I walked in the door, I saw the red heart-shaped balloon that my chiropractor gave me floating in the corner of our living room. However, when I finally got in bed, I was surprised to see the red balloon floating next to my dresser, on my side of the bed. My first reaction was, “Did somebody move the balloon?” but everybody was already asleep at that point. Then I smiled as I thought about the “heart consciousness” Kwan Yin taught us. As I gazed at the balloon I said “Thank you Kwan Yin, I got it. Thanks for the reminder!” All of a sudden, the red balloon floated about a foot toward me and then sank ALL the way to the floor. I couldn’t believe my eyes! My first gut feeling was, “ground yourself in love.” OK that’s really COOL. Obviously she knows I’m totally a visual person so she decided to SHOW me her message.

My happiness was short-lived, however, as a sense of panic took over. What if it meant “fallen love”? Did something bad happen to my parents?!!! I jumped out of bed and rushed to the phone in the kitchen. It was past midnight but I just HAD to call my parents in Taiwan. It actually took me many tries, before I reached BOTH of them. I’ll spare you the drama here. Luckily due to the time difference it was their lunch time, so at least I didn’t have to wake them up in the middle of the night. They were both safe and sound, although a bit surprised that I called at that hour. Feeling relieved, I went back to bed.

The next morning, I called Christine to thank her and told her about the balloon. I didn’t tell her what I thought at all, only what I saw. She said it’s such a beautiful message, that Kwan Yin wanted to bring my heart closer to me (and to her). She also thinks the balloon sinking to the floor meant “grounding.” I told her that’s what I thought at first, but then I got worried about my parents. Before I could tell her that I did find out my parents were fine, she immediately assured me it’s not about them, and that my first intuition was correct.

Isn’t it funny? Here I am being tested again, by the great Goddess herself, to listen to my heart and trust my intuition, which has been a lesson given to me, over and over, recently. Instead of trusting my first intuition, my ego mind rushed in with a huge dose of fear. How typical! I just have to laugh at myself. What a lesson! Hopefully, next time I’ll be able to discern better.

By the way, I tried to plop the balloon up in the air, but, it decidedly wouldn’t float up again. I’ll remember the message, nonetheless.

Trust your heart. Ground yourself in LOVE.

Thank you Kwan Yin!

“Hueina Su is a remarkable woman. She shares her story of growing up in a culture that was restrictive to her character. The ways of her society left her feeling unworthy and limited. The great thing about Hueina’s story is that you don’t have to come from her culture, or share her experiences to understand. Many of us have felt unworthy whether it comes from an outside source, or from within. But Hueina’s words words will show you that YOU have the power within you to feel worthy. Her experiences were all she knew. These words that were spoken to her were ingrained in her brain since childhood. However, she managed to discover how to empower herself and change her beliefs. And from that she created a very fulfilling life. And she’ll teach you how to also. Hueina Su is empowering, uplifting, but most of all relatable. You will see yourself in her, and you will see a new perspective on life through her. Thank you Hueina.”

“Hueina Su is truly an inspiration to all who have the honor of hearing her story. I was recently incredibly touched by her segment in the movie, The Keeper of the Keys, in which she shares her experience and displays great courage and enlightenment in overcoming a major obstacle laid before her at birth. Hueina was taught as a Chinese girl that she was not as important as a boy…nor was she as wanted as a boy. It takes my breath away to imagine the personal toll such misguided teaching has taken on each and every Chinese female who has been subjected to such negative programming, not to mention the great loss that has been suffered by Chinese society and the entire world. Hueina’s steadfast strength, courage, intellect, and her innate female wisdom to perceive truth has enabled her to step out of the darkness forced upon her and find the light within to believe in herself and realize her true magnificent value as a human being, regardless of her sex. For standing up against a belief that is so deeply ingrained in a society and for helping the world to see just how negative the ramifications can be of such an outdated, counteractive mindset, Hueina Su is a hero paving a bright new path for not only Chinese women, but for an entire planet filled with beautiful girls and boys who are equally important and have something spectacular to contribute to our world.”
