Alignment, Metamorphosis & Second New Beginning

Authentic Self Inner Beauty

It’s been a long while since I wrote to you, and I hope this finds you well. Today is the first day of Chinese New Year of the Fire Monkey (traditionally, we celebrate for 15 days), and also a powerful Aquarian New Moon. Needless to say, new beginning is on my mind.

I’ve always appreciated the fact that Chinese New Year falls on a different date from the Western New Year. Instead of starting the new year on January 1st, Chinese New Year usually starts somewhere in late January to early February. Since it follows the Lunar Calendar, it always coincides with a new moon, which makes it an even more powerful day for a new beginning.

What does it mean to you, my dear? If, for whatever reason, your 2016 didn’t take off the way you’d imagined, no worries. Now you get a second chance to hit the “REBOOT” button and begin the new year again! Isn’t that awesome? :)

To harness the powerful energy of the Fire Monkey and Aquarian New Moon, it’s a great idea to spend some time today to tune in, center yourself, and set your intention for the year. Choosing a theme word for the year is a powerful way to anchor your intention and focus for the year.

Did you choose a theme word for this year? Alignment is my theme word for 2016. Alignment in my body, mind, heart, soul, as well as any external expression in my life and business. I intend to love myself completely, embrace my unique beauty, and LIVE MY TRUTH.

Last year, my theme was Self-Love, and that will continue indefinitely. Yes, self-love is a life-long practice, just like self-care, just like any spiritual practice. Last year, I gave myself PERMISSION to go on a year-long journey of SELF-DISCOVERY, SELF-LOVE and SACRED SELF-CARE. What a difference a year has made!!

I feel like a different person… a calmer, wiser, more compassionate, self-loving, truer version of myself. I’ve re-connected with the Divine, with my True Self, and returned from my journey — my Metamorphosis — with renewed energy & purpose.

I’m very grateful for the intense INNER WORK I’ve done for myself, with the help of my coaches and soul sisters (I couldn’t have done it by myself). I’m very grateful that I gave myself PERMISSION and TIME to go through my own Metamorphosis. As I’ve made powerful inner transformations and breakthroughs, miracles happened in my outer reality too!! When I reviewed what happened in my life last year, I was BLOWN AWAY by some of the miracles that I knew wouldn’t have happened, if I hadn’t done my INNER WORK to “clear the way”.

The truth is, I can’t stress how important INNER WORK is. Without taking the time & efforts to do the inner work, you can not create powerful and sustainable changes in the outer reality. You simply can’t.

The metamorphosis of butterflies is probably one of THE most amazing transformations in nature. Before a caterpillar can transform into a butterfly, it must first morph into a chrysalis. Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar must completely DISSOLVE its old self and RE-CREATE itself as a butterfly. On the surface, the chrysalis is motionless and doesn’t even look alive. But on the inside, the most radical, most amazing transformation is taking place. The chrysalis stage is THE most critical and powerful stage in the butterfly’s life cycle.

The INNER WORK we do in coaching is like the chrysalis stage in the butterfly’s metamorphosis. Without the chrysalis — and the INNER WORK that the caterpillar does inside the chrysalis — there will be no butterfly.

By the way, it’s almost impossible to do the kind of transformational, Metamorphosis-Level INNER WORK without the help of coaches, mentors and/or spiritual teachers. I can attest to that, and I’m sure anyone who has gone through a Metamorphosis would concur with me.

My old self — the Type-A Overachiever — only wanted to focus on DOING & ACHIEVING. She would get very impatient and SELF-JUDGING when she didn’t see outer results. She relied on her brilliant left-brain, logic, hard work and sheer WILL POWER to MAKE IT HAPPEN — whatever IT is. It was a surefire path to self-abuse and burnout. Can you relate?

Now I know better. Now I’m much more loving, compassionate and kind toward myself — and everyone else. I take better care of myself — physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually — as I continue to take care of my family, my friends and my clients. I have more peace, spaciousness and beauty in my life and my environment. I have more to give to others and I’m not giving from a place of being a martyr or victim. I have certain non-negotiable self-care practices, and I don’t feel guilty taking care of myself any more.

Another huge difference is that instead of relying on my left-brain and will power, I’ve learned how to TUNE IN to Divine guidance and my own inner wisdom. It’s a much gentler, peaceful yet more powerful way of BEING and ACHIEVING things.

Can you resonate with what I said? What is your intention for this year?

Are you longing to love & accept yourself, take better care of yourself without guilt, heal your past, re-connect with who you truly are (instead of who you think you “should” be), embrace & express your unique beauty, and create a life that is self-loving, joyful, fulfilling and fully aligned with WHO YOU ARE?

Would you like to take a year-long transformational journey (aka your own Metamorphosis) with me as your coach & wisdom guide? This year I’m taking a few select women on a year-long journey with me. If your heart is whispering (or shouting) a resounding YES, please listen…. Your heart will never steer you wrong.

Remember, no matter what has or has not happened in the past, you can always begin AGAIN…

If you would like more information or explore the possibility of working with me as your coach, sign up here and I will be happy to set up a time to talk with you.

Peace & Joy,
Hueina

Have You Made THE Shift Yet?

Start a Legacy
Four days ago (March 11th), Google CFO Patrick Pichette announced that, after nearly 7 years as CFO, he is retiring in order to spend more time with his family. His heartfelt letter of resignation blew up the Internet and inspired many discussions and articles about work life balance and honoring one’s core values.

On the same day, my daughter received a wonderful news that she was named as a recipient of the Rutgers 2015 Academic Excellence Award. This award is given by the university to the top 10% of sophomores at Rutgers based on GPA performance in their respective schools. My husband and I are overjoyed and SO proud of our baby girl. She maintained a 4.0 GPA through her freshman year, and I know that’s not easy as an Animal Science major on the Pre-Vet track. She has always been very conscientious and self-motivated. My husband and I are far from the so-called Tiger Dad or Tiger Mom. In fact, growing up in an “Achieve or Die” culture, having experienced (and barely survived) the Overachiever Minefield, and having lost 2 cousins to suicide in their teen and early 20s, I am highly aware and mindful of NOT subjecting my own two children to many things that I went through in my youth.

When the news broke out on the same day about Patrick Pichette’s retirement and my daughter’s award, I was once again humbly reminded of my enormous responsibility of raising the next-generation high achievers. I was reminded of a photo of me and my daughter taken on her high school graduation day (pictured), where there was a banner behind us that read “START A LEGACY”. I wasn’t aware of the banner when we were taking the picture. It was until much later when I looked at the picture and realized what a PERFECT message we were given. What a blessing! This whole “business” of being a parent is about leaving a legacy, isn’t it? We are not here just for ourselves. At the end of the day, we’ve got to ask ourselves, “What kind of legacy am I creating? At the end of my life, what kind of legacy am I leaving behind?” That’s WAY more important than any fame, fortune or achievements.

We’ve got to ask ourselves, over and over, “What kind of role model are we being for our children?” As you know, our children learn more from what we do, than what we preach.

A few years ago, I watched a transformational movie called The Shift, starring Dr. Wayne Dyer, one of my favorite spiritual authors and mentors. In the movie, he talked about a fascinating study called The Moment That Turns Your Values Upside Down. In this study, they asked a large group of men and women to list their top 5 priorities before and after “The Shift”, which is the “Quantum Moment” that changes your life in such a dramatic way that challenges and changes your priorities, core values, and even WHO YOU ARE. Sometimes The Shift is triggered by a spiritual awakening, a tragic loss, or some kind of “wake up call”. Doesn’t it remind you of my Metamorphosis story?

Are you curious about the top 5 priorities men and women have? (Hint: they are VERY different) And how their top 5 priorities changed after The Shift? (again, VERY different and totally surprising)

Let’s look at men first. Before The Shift, men’s top 5 priorities were:

  1. Wealth
  2. Sense of Adventure
  3. Achievement
  4. Pleasure
  5. Be Respected

After The Shift, men’s top 5 priorities changed to:

  1. Spirituality
  2. Personal Peace (less anxiety and stress, peace of mind)
  3. Family
  4. God’s Will (a sense of purpose)
  5. Honesty (authenticity, honest with his own feelings and with himself)

Dr. Wayne Dyer noted that spirituality was NOT even on top 15 for men before The Shift, however, it became their #1 priority after The Shift. Family was on top 15 before The Shift, although it was way down on the list.

Now, let’s look at women. Before The Shift, women’s top 5 priorities were:

  1. Family
  2. Sense of Independence
  3. Career
  4. Fitting In
  5. Attractiveness (looking nice, be liked by others)

After The Shift, women’s top 5 priorities changed to:

  1. Personal Growth (How am I growing as a human being?)
  2. Sense of Self-Esteem (How do I feel about myself? Am I worthy and valuable?)
  3. Spirituality
  4. Happiness
  5. Forgiveness (letting go of resentment and hurt from the past)

Dr. Wayne Dyer noted that, for women, happiness was almost at the bottom of their priority list before The Shift. Women were told that doing what they are supposed to do is more important than feeling happy or feeling entitled to happiness. After The Shift, happiness climbed to #4 on their priority list.

Quite a dramatic change of priorities for BOTH men and women, right? Were you surprised? What surprised you the most? Can you relate to the study results?

Back to Google CFO Patrick Pichette. What prompted this dramatic and unorthodox career move? Pichette recalls a vacation in Africa with his wife last fall, during which she suggested they keep traveling and really see the world. He initially gave a typical prudent CFO type response: I would love to keep going, but we have to go back. It’s not time yet. There is still so much to do at Google, so many people counting on me, etc. (you can read his full memo at the end of this post)

“Then she asked the killer question,” Pichette wrote in his memo, which he posted to Google+. “So when is it going to be time? Our time? My time? The questions just hung there in the cold morning African air.”

That was his THE Shift moment. He recognized and embraced THE Shift, and made the conscious and wise decision to honor his core values and priorities.

How about you? Are you living a life aligned with your core values and priorities? If not, would you like to make THE Shift?

No, you don’t need to quit your job, run to Africa or move to a monastery on top of a mountain (unless you want to). You CAN make THE Shift right where you are.

Nirvana, as they say, is just a thought away.

THE Shift is a change process which starts from WITHIN yourself — your thoughts, beliefs, mindset. It’s an inside-out job. Of course, to change your life to re-align with your new priorities and core values, you’ll have to change your behaviors and make different choices about your life too. This is where coaching can help. Big time.

Once you become aware that your current life is not in alignment with your core values, priorities and/or who you truly are, the mis-alignment can feel increasingly uncomfortable, even excruciatingly painful. It’s like forcing yourself into a pair of way-too-small shoes AND having to walk 5K in those shoes every single day. Ugh! It’s pure torture and self-abuse. Just the thought of it makes me shudder.

Instead of torturing yourself, let me invite you to consider coaching with me. If you are a high-achieving woman (or man) who is very successful BUT feeling overwhelmed, exhausted and unhappy at the end of the day, AND you have challenges with:

1) Taking care of EVERYONE but not enough time for YOURSELF

2) You are dealing with “Internal Stress” such as being very hard on yourself, constantly criticizing yourself, trying to be nice and please everyone, trying to be perfect & put-together all the time, fear of failure, or fear of judgment/rejection

If you are struggling with one or more of the above challenges, you WILL benefit from coaching with me.

Some of the benefits of coaching with me:

  • Less stress and anxiety, Better sleep
  • More joy, inner peace and calm
  • More self-confidence at work
  • More self-compassion and less self-judgment
  • Better mental focus, productivity & performance
  • Better understanding of your own limiting beliefs & behaviors (Less self-sabotage)
  • Better self-care and better health
  • Better relationship with yourself and with others (think your spouse, children, in-laws, coworkers, friends etc)
  • Better at saying NO and setting healthy boundaries
  • More time for you WITHOUT GUILT
  • Practical tools and strategies for managing yourself and your work/life

Imagine… If you can have just ONE of the above benefits RIGHT NOW, how differently will YOU feel? How much BETTER will your work life & family life be?

The Peace, Joy and Freedom of creating a life you love can be yours, if you have the courage to MAKE THE CHANGE. Let me be your guide.

Meditation

The truth is, if you keep doing the same things you’ve been doing, you’ll keep getting the same results. How will you feel a year from now, or 5 years from now, if you keep doing what you’ve been doing?

If you are READY and WILLING to invest in yourself and your life, I’d like to offer you a *complimentary* 30-min Initial Consultation with me.

This can be done by phone (or Skype, if you live outside of the US) at a time that’s convenient for you and me. Please note: this is NOT a sample coaching session. This is a consultation to explore if we are a good fit for coaching.

Whether you decide to coach with me, you WILL definitely get clarity about your challenges and the possible action steps for you. So, you really have nothing to lose, and EVERYTHING to gain.

I have a limited number of Initial Consultation openings each month. It’s first come, first serve. To apply for your consultation, simply click on the “Apply Now” button below to schedule your appointment online.

P.S. Here is Patrick Pichette’s full memo:

After nearly 7 years as CFO, I will be retiring from Google to spend more time with my family. Yeah, I know you’ve heard that line before. We give a lot to our jobs. I certainly did. And while I am not looking for sympathy, I want to share my thought process because so many people struggle to strike the right balance between work and personal life.

This story starts last fall. A very early morning last September, after a whole night of climbing, looking at the sunrise on top of Africa – Mt Kilimanjaro. Tamar (my wife) and I were not only enjoying the summit, but on such a clear day, we could see in the distance, the vast plain of the Serengeti at our feet, and with it the calling of all the potential adventures Africa has to offer. (see exhibit #1 – Tamar and I on Kili).

And Tamar out of the blue said “Hey, why don’t we just keep on going”. Let’s explore Africa, and then turn east to make our way to India, it’s just next door, and we’re here already. Then, we keep going; the Himalayas, Everest, go to Bali, the Great Barrier Reef… Antarctica, let’s go see Antarctica!?” Little did she know, she was tempting fate.

I remember telling Tamar a typical prudent CFO type response- I would love to keep going, but we have to go back. It’s not time yet, There is still so much to do at Google, with my career, so many people counting on me/us – Boards, Non Profits, etc

But then she asked the killer question: So when is it going to be time? Our time? My time? The questions just hung there in the cold morning African air.

A few weeks later, I was happy back at work, but could not shake away THE question: When is it time for us to just keep going? And so began a reflection on my/our life. Through numerous hours of cycling last fall (my introvert happy place) I concluded on a few simple and self-evident truths:

First, The kids are gone. Two are in college, one graduated and in a start-up in Africa. Beautiful young adults we are very proud of. Tamar honestly deserves most of the credit here. She has done a marvelous job. Simply marvelous. But the reality is that for Tamar and I, there will be no more Cheerios encrusted minivan, night watch because of ear infections, ice hockey rinks at 6:00am. Nobody is waiting for us/needing us.

Second, I am completing this summer 25-30 years of nearly non-stop work (depending on how you wish to cut the data). And being member of FWIO, the noble Fraternity of Worldwide Insecure Over-achievers, it has been a whirlwind of truly amazing experiences. But as I count it now, it has also been a frenetic pace for about 1500 weeks now. Always on – even when I was not supposed to be. Especially when I was not supposed to be. And am guilty as charged – I love my job (still do), my colleagues, my friends, the opportunities to lead and change the world.

Third, this summer, Tamar and I will be celebrating our 25th anniversary. When our kids are asked by their friends about the success of the longevity of our marriage, they simply joke that Tamar and I have spent so little time together that “it’s really too early to tell” if our marriage will in fact succeed.
If they could only know how many great memories we already have together. How many will you say? How long do you have? But one thing is for sure, I want more. And she deserves more. Lots more.

Allow me to spare you the rest of the truths. But the short answer is simply that I could not find a good argument to tell Tamar we should wait any longer for us to grab our backpacks and hit the road – celebrate our last 25 years together by turning the page and enjoy a perfectly fine mid life crisis full of bliss and beauty, and leave the door open to serendipity for our next leadership opportunities, once our long list of travels and adventures is exhausted.

Working at Google is a privilege, nothing less. I have worked with the best of the best, and know that I am leaving Google in great hands. I have made so many friends at Google it’s not funny. Larry, Sergey, Eric, thank you for friendship. I am forever grateful for letting me be me, for your trust, your warmth, your support, and for so much laughter through good and not so good times.

To be clear, I am still here. I wish to transition over the coming months but only after we have found a new Googley CFO and help him/her through an orderly transition, which will take some time.

In the end, life is wonderful, but nonetheless a series of trade offs, especially between business/professional endeavours and family/community. And thankfully, I feel I’m at a point in my life where I no longer have to have to make such tough choices anymore. And for that I am truly grateful. Carpe Diem.

Stop! In the Name of Love

The majority of people I work with and speak to are highly successful and intelligent high-achieving professional women and entrepreneurs. It’s the same type of women I’m also connected with on Facebook and other social media. The interesting thing about social media is that you get to have a peek into other people’s lives from their posts and also from the comments by others. If you pay attention, there are some patterns and trends worth noticing.

For example, there is a worrisome trend I’ve observed over the years, but more so in the last few years. More and more women (whether successful professional women, entrepreneurs, or stay-at-home moms) are pushing themselves past breaking point! As women, we’ve taken on more and more responsibilities both at home and at work. In the process of pursuing our professional goals and taking care of our loved ones, our own needs often got pushed off our mile-long to-do list. Not only that, I’m seeing more and more women who couldn’t (or wouldn’t) take a much-needed break UNLESS they are sick.

Can you relate?

I cringe every time I read or hear someone say that they are so physically ill or injured, BUT they choose to push on, instead of allowing themselves to rest and heal. They complain that they are feeling so miserable, but, they still wouldn’t stop. So, a simple cold might drag on forever, or turn into a sinus infection or even pneumonia. Then, and ONLY then, they’d be FORCED to take a long break in order to recover.

Believe me, I know this all too well, because that used to be my M.O. for many years.

Years ago, I was working with a very successful business coach, who is a typical Type-A high achiever. I’d never forget a story she told us. She was pushing herself really hard, as usual, and running nonstop building her coaching business, writing a new book and getting ready for an international speaking tour that she was really excited about. Right before her speaking tour, however, she tripped and broke her Achilles tendon! She was forced to cancel her speaking tour and rest for 6 months. It was a painful and long recovery, not to mention a costly lesson. She laughed and said that the Universe literally forced her to stop, because she wouldn’t listen.

That story really made an impression on me. I became very aware of how often I had done the same thing to myself. I was so driven and always pushed myself relentlessly. It’d take nothing short of an illness or injury to slow me down. I almost always got sick right after a big goal or project was completed — and sometimes I got sick right before the deadline. Sounds familiar? I’d push and push, ignoring my body’s signal for needing a break. Then I’d get sick and rightfully get a chance to rest. It’s almost as if I unconsciously didn’t feel that I deserved to rest UNLESS I was sick, so my body had to break down in order to get the rest it needed.

Can you relate? The show must go on, you might say. And, you’d even say it with a sense of pride, as if you’re wearing a badge of honor for working so hard while you’re feeling so ill.

One time, a very successful coach I know said that she was very proud for delivering a multi-day training, even though she was running a high fever and coughing miserably. She patted herself on the back for keeping her commitment in spite of her flu. I commended her on her strong work ethic and commitment, then gently asked, “I wonder if it is for your highest good, and your participants’ highest good, for you to deliver the training when you are feeling so sick?

It’s something to think about, isn’t it? Besides the obvious concern that you don’t want to pass your germs to someone else, why are you doing this to yourself? More importantly, what are you modeling for your clients, team members, students, colleagues, and/or children?

Whether you are a professional woman, business owner, corporate executive or working mom, your health and well-being are essential for your long-term success and happiness. You are the “golden goose” and you need to treat yourself accordingly.

When I look back at how I was treating myself years ago, my heart is filled with compassion for my younger self — just as I’m now feeling compassionate toward the women who are pushing themselves relentlessly, often past breaking point. I’m so glad that I’ve learned to be kinder to myself, take better care of myself, and tune in more keenly to my own body. I rest when I need to. I no longer need to get sick, just so that I can “legitimately” take a much-needed break.

If you are one of those high-achievers who push themselves without proper self-care, if you are heading toward burning out or breaking down (physically and/or emotionally), please, STOP in the name of love. STOP in the name of self-love. STOP for the sake of the people you love (and those who love you). STOP for the sustainable success of your career, business, and/or the cause you care deeply about. They need you to be healthy, happy, vibrant and engaged. They need you to be there for them for years to come. Your burning out or breaking down WOULD NOT serve anyone.

I sincerely hope that you, too, will learn to be more loving and compassionate toward yourself. Give yourself a little more time each day, to rest, to nurture your body and recharge your spirit. Even just a few minutes of quiet time or a cat nap would make a huge difference. Give it a try, OK? YOU deserve it.

Is Your Perfectionism Keeping You Stuck?

If you are a high-achiever, you always aim for excellence and achievement. You don’t mind working extra hard, going the extra mile in order to achieve your goals. However, in the name of pursuing excellence, it’s very common for high-achievers to fall prey to perfectionism. There’s a fine line between being excellent and being perfect. The desire to be excellent motivates you to move forward and be the best you can be. On the flip side, the need to be perfect fills you with anxiety and self-doubt, runs you ragged and keeps you stuck.

Your Inner Perfectionist may sound like this:

  • I have to be perfect OR ELSE!
  • If I’m not perfect, I’m a complete failure.
  • People are waiting for me to fail and they will laugh at me.
  • I’m not trying hard enough, otherwise I would’ve been perfect.
  • Why can’t I pull it off like “everybody else”? What’s wrong with me?
  • If I’m not perfect, nobody will love me.
  • I can’t afford to make any mistakes.
  • I have to be the best in everything I do.
  • I’m so afraid of making the wrong choices or wrong moves that I’ve lost confidence in myself.
  • If I can’t make it perfect (or, If I’m not sure I can succeed), why do I even bother getting started?
  • If I don’t finish it, I won’t have to find out how imperfect (what a loser) I am.

Does it sound familiar? How does reading these statements make you FEEL – physically and emotionally? Do you tend to set impossibly high standards for yourself (and others) and beat yourself up over and over for not reaching your goals? If you feel anxious, frustrated, stuck in analysis paralysis, chest tightening, hyperventilating, paralyzed by fear of failure, with an extra dose of self-doubt or even self-loathing, you are probably a perfectionist. And the higher your aspirations are, the more severely affected you would be by perfectionism. The more successful you are, the more problematic perfectionism would manifest in your life, your health, your relationships and career/business.

Be honest: Is your Inner Perfectionist running you ragged these days? I know, because I’ve been there myself.

Last week I was invited by my Taiwanese sister Andrea J. Lee to speak via video at her 2012 The Wealthy Thought Leader event. Andrea asked me to share my experience in The Keeper of the Keys movie (which I costar with Jack Canfield, John Gray and Marci Shimoff), and offer advice for attendees who are considering a movie project like this in the future.

If you are in the coaching & personal development industry, you’d know it’s a great honor to be included in Andrea’s Wealthy Thought Leader event. Andrea is known for teaching thought leaders on how to stay ahead of the curve, make money AND meaning via innovation. Her annual Wealthy Thought Leader event (it’s her 4th this year) in Vancouver, B.C. always attracts high-caliber speakers and thought leaders from all over the world. So, imagine my joy and surprise when I got a message from Andrea inviting me to share my experience at her event. And since she asked for a video sharing, I don’t even have to worry about flying over there. I was so excited!

There’s only one caveat: I got Andrea’s email on Sunday night, asking me if I can send her my video by Tuesday, or the latest Wednesday (her event starts on Thursday morning).

“Oh, I wish I had more time to work on this!!” my Inner Perfectionist piped up right away.

I assured her, “That’s okay, it’s only a very short video (5 min) and we can make it.” She insisted, “But, Hueina, this is your very first contact with Andrea’s community, and there will be so many accomplished thought leaders there. You want to make a perfect first impression. It’s very important, you know.” Well, first impression IS important. I can’t argue with that!

Then, my Inner Good Girl chimed in, “And Hueina, it’s such an honor that Andrea asked you to do this. It’s important to her and you don’t want to disappoint her.” The Inner Good Girl is the one who always wants to be a “good girl” and do good. She is all concerned about being proper, doing things right and making others happy (often at the cost of her own well-being). I started to feel a little pressure on my chest. Well, I do want to give Andrea and her community a great video that brings value to them; however, I do not want to get stressed out over this.

Been there, done there. Not again.

Instead, my intention was to make this video with JOY and offer it as my gift to Andrea and her community. I wanted to have a little FUN in the process as well (fun is one of my highest core values). Knowing the persuasive power of my Inner Perfectionist, and fully aware of my time constraints, I made a deal with her right off the bat. I told her that I agreed with her that we wanted to present a high-quality video that represents me well, and brings high value for Andrea’s community. On the other hand, I made it clear to her that we needed to stick to my schedule and honor my other business and family commitments (and it goes without saying that I would keep my self-care as well). AND, I wanted to aim for being professional and authentic, NOT perfect.

With the ground rules set, I looked at my business and family schedule, and picked out a couple small blocks of time for this project. I knew I most likely won’t be able to record and edit the video in one sitting. Trying to do everything all at once would probably tire me out. On the other hand, I knew I had to give myself and my Inner Perfectionist a deadline, otherwise I’ll be spending WAY too much time and energy working on “perfecting” the video. Can you relate to this? 😉

So, my Inner Perfectionist and I went to work – first in our head, planning out what we’d like to share based on Andrea’s questions. As it turned out, it’s not easy to condense all I wanted to share in 5 minutes, without feeling rushed or speaking at a frantic pace (that wouldn’t be peaceful or powerful, would it?) The creative in me had so many ideas, and I wouldn’t and couldn’t settle for a boring “talking head” video. So, I decided to include a snippet of The Keeper of the Keys movie trailer, and used a short clip of my segment in the movie to illustrate my point of telling deeply personal story in a powerful way. By the way, that’s how you can connect with the audience, stand out and be memorable.

I was excited by this new idea, so I planned out the video and recorded my speaking part. Next is the editing part – stringing everything together. Of course, every step of the way, my Inner Perfectionist was by my side, relentlessly reminding me to be perfect and fiercely pointing out my flaws. Every time she did that, I thanked her for trying to help and patiently but firmly reminded her the ground rules we’ve agreed on. Reminding myself my intention to bring value instead of trying to create a perfect video really helped. When I used up the time I’ve set for myself to complete this project, I saved the video, and sent it to Andrea right away. She told me she loved the video and they way I’ve designed it, with commentary and snippets of the movie trailer as well as my story. When she showed the video at The Wealthy Thought Leader event last Friday, I got so many praises and accolades from the live audience as well as simulcast attendees. Even days after I still got messages from Facebook thanking me for my sharing. :)

So, what can you learn from my experience? Here are 7 tips for overcoming perfectionism:

1. When opportunity knocks, you need to take decisively swift action. Successful people are action-takers. The rule of thumb is, ALWAYS SAY YES first, then figure out how to get it done.

2. Set a clear intention before you commit to or start a new project. What do you intend to achieve as the end result? (hint: aim for anything but absolute perfection.) Also, what do you intend to experience in the process and as a result of this project? For example, joy, fun, connecting with others, learning something new, making a difference, feeling proud of yourself, etc.

3. Set a clear time frame for you to work on the project. This is for you if you have a tendency to not finish your project, procrastinate like crazy, or spend FOREVER trying to make it perfect.

4. Before you start anything, set ground rules for yourself and your Inner Perfectionist, and firmly reinforce these rules. In my coaching, I teach my clients specific ways to communicate with their Inner Perfectionists and turn them into helpers, not tyrants who boss them around until they are totally run down.

5. Acknowledge and praise yourself for your efforts and progress (no matter how little), not just the end result. Practice loving kindness and Intensive Self-Care.

6. Know that your Inner Perfectionist (with her magnifying glass and white cotton gloves) is probably the only one who can see your flaws. To other people, you are probably quite amazing.

7. Remember, good enough is good enough. If you are offering something (be it your words or gifts of any kind), as long as it’s from your heart and you have done your best, it’s more than good enough.

So there you have it. My 7 tips for overcoming perfectionism. There’s no extra charge for the typos. :)

“The Wisdom Guide Celebration Summit – How to Build a Thriving Business Without Selling Your Soul” is organized and hosted by Melanie Yost, an author, speaker, and Business Mentor for Helping Professionals.

The concept of “Wisdom Guide” is borne out of observation from so-called “Gurus” in coaching, consulting and speaking industries. There are many heart-centered business owners, helping professionals and healers who are struggling to build their business because the business models, marketing strategies and sales tactic from these gurus just don’t fit for them.

It’s not that there is anything wrong. It’s because many of the products and services in the market place are developed by coaches with “Guru” personalities and many of the heart-centered business owners, helping professionals and healers are “Wisdom Guide” personalities. What works for Gurus doesn’t work for Wisdom Guides. So Wisdom Guides try the techniques, don’t get the results and end up feeling like there is something seriously wrong with them.

Yost has invited 12 successful and amazing Wisdom Guides to share their personal stories (complete with all the challenges and triumphs) of how they built their thriving business and offer teachings, guidance and pearls of wisdom to help you do the same.

The title of Su’s speaking is “From Broken and Suicidal to Rocking on the Red Carpet — The Secrets to Claiming Your Peace, Power & Prosperity as a Wisdom Guide,” She will share with the audience:

* The biggest mistake you are probably making in your business right now, trying to succeed as a wisdom guide

* The 8 Invisible Chaos that keep you fearful, stuck, broke, unhappy, shooting yourself in the foot and beating yourself up over and over (and a powerful 3-step process to overcome that)

* The surprising secret link to more love, joy, confidence, peace, power and prosperity
